My family and I express our sincerest condolences to your family at this time. Cherish all your wonderful memories of your loved one. My family and I knew him as Dr. Mirza. And he was always kind and as a doctor, he had the greatest bedside manner. We felt like family; he was part of our family. He always showed and shared his passion for helping people, his patients, and his family. He will deeply be missed. We look forward to seeing him again in paradise! God promises us a new world where there will be no more mourning, sickness, and death. The Prophet Isaiah states He will swallow up death forever. (Isaiah 25:8)

Lahore, circa 1996. One of my earliest childhood memories is of Taiyajaan teaching me how to ride a bike. We were on a dirt road in the neighbourhood not far from the family home. I remember straddling my bicycle for dear life as Taiyajaan followed close behind, one hand casually steering his own wheels and the other firmly clasped around my neck. A nervous mess, I repeatedly begged him not to let go. “Don’t worry, Bachoo, I’ve got you” he said, in his ever calm and measured tone. My desperate pleas and his reassuring replies went on for a time until, sure enough, he let go and propelled me into the road full throttle. The adrenaline sustained me for about 10 seconds before I finally crash-landed at the base of a towering oak tree. I’d grazed my arm against the hot earth and could feel it burning my skin, and so I began to cry. Moments later, Taiyajaan pulled up beside me, totally calm and untroubled by my fall, and looked over my arm. He started to laugh. I was bewildered by his reaction - why did he let go? Why isn’t he comforting me? The finer details of that moment escape me now, but I remember him pulling the bike up and placing me back on the seat. “Shall we go again?” he said. We went again.

When we were kids, Kiren and I would eagerly await the arrival of the postman two to three days before our birthdays. Maamun never forgot our birthdays. His sweet messages made me feel so special.

Whenever we visited Lahore, he used to take us to Fortress Stadium. While Mum shopped, Maamun spent hours and hours taking us around - talking to us and teasing us. It was those simple moments that seemed so much fun; just being out with him, exploring Lahore, and enjoying our Maamun’s company.
